Toni Carrington intimated that both he and his wife, Ray are long term members of the Bendigo  Sandhurst Rotary Club, Melbourne, Victoria.
Ray was a district nurse and Toni a teacher but eventually set up his own business. When they retired they set up a B & B business which they both enjoy and still run. They have 4 children and 13 grandchildren which also keeps them busy. They have enjoyed their visit to Scotland and thanked Mike and Kay Latimer for looking after them so well.
Toni presented two banners to President Rodger, one club and one district and Rodger presented them with a C & B banner.

Sandy presented us with a graphic display of men and equipment of the first world war and showed us how the war had developed.
Artillery was introduced and accounted for about 70% of the casualties.
Aircraft were also introduced but were somewhat fragile and not always effective. In some cases the gun fire damaged their own planes. Eventually a mechanism was developed which enabled the gun to fire through the propeller which made aircraft much more effective.
Parachutes were introduced but were not issued to airmen as the authorities thought they might be used instead of trying to fly a damaged aircraft back to its base.
Deadly gas was also used and killed large numbers.
Sandy’s presentation emphasised how dangerous it was to be a soldier in the first world war. Many members were not aware of this.
Robert Menzies gave a vote of thanks to both our speakers.
