Our speakers were Louise Flockhart and Aimee McRae, two pupils at Balerno High School and it was a pity that there were so many apologies as it was a truly amazing and professional presentation.
The young women introduced themselves. Louise is 14 and in S3 and Aimee is 16, is in S6 and has recently been appointed head girl.
They described themselves as international climbers and have represented both Great Britain and Scotland as well as winning innumerable competitions personally at home and abroad.
Their sport is indoor and they do most of their climbing at the climbing centre in Ratho. They rated the centre in Ratho as being in the top ten in the world. Climbing has recently been recognised as an Olympic sport and both of our speakers hope to compete at the Olympics in the future.
There are three disciplines namely Lead, Bouldering and Speed. Bouldering is the most popular and our speakers explained the technicalities and showed a video of Speed climbing.
Louise trains five days on the wall and six days off the wall and Aimee has four days on and one day off as well as a run each day before school. They still have time for a social life, but are encouraged to stay in on Saturday evenings as they train each Sunday. The sport can be dangerous and Aimee missed six months training due to a dislocated elbow following a fall, but still managed to do well at competitions.
Louise and Aimee both thanked the club for their financial support.
There were several questions from club members all dealt with expertly by our speakers. The answer to one question was that while boys may be stronger, girls have better technique.
The vote of thanks for an inspirational talk was given by Roy Stirrat.
