Ciara Simms is back from a fantastic year in the USA.

Ciara, a former pupil at Currie High School, was successful in winning a Georgia Rotary Scholarship to spend a year studying at Kennesaw State University in Georgia, USA. At the end of that year she came to our Rotary Club to tell us about her experiences and to thank us for supporting her application.

Every year the Georgia Rotary Scholarship Programme offers some 50 students from all over the world the opportunity to study for one academic year at a university in Georgia. The scholarship covers fees, books, accommodation and food.

Here’s what Ciara was able to do in one short year.

She studied computer science which she has gone on to study now at Newcastle University.
She became a member of the university swimming team.
She travelled – sometimes with the swimming team – to see New York, Chicago, Nashville, New Orleans, Memphis, Cancun, Boston, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Miami, Charleston, Seattle, San Antonio, Austin, San Francisco, Portland, and St Louis. How about that?
She made friends with other students from all over the world.

Reflecting on life over there, Ciara found the biggest differences from home to be the attitude to sporting events as family activities, the public transport (or lack of it), Drive Thrus and sweet tea.

Over recent years the Currie Balerno Rotary Club has sponsored ten students from the local area and we hope to sponsor more Georgia scholars in the years to come. We are now looking to support some-one for the 2019-2020 academic year. Anyone interested in applying is invited to contact Derek Douglas on 441 3335.
