R I Night / Eric Milligan

.

One of our Paul Harris Fellow’s, Eric Milligan PHF, and ex Lord Provost of the City of Edinburgh, addressed the meeting in support of our recognition of Rotary Day this year.

Although we had interfaced with Eric more recently he chose to remind us that it had been 14 years since he had last addressed the club. He was still proud of his award of the PHF as he identified and supported the principles of the Rotary Movement and it’s work at home and abroad. He then produced his PHF medal and ribbon and wore it proudly for the remainder of the evening.
He focused his presentation on 3 aspects of Rotary which he felt , both in business and private life were the key elements of success, which he had followed throughout his career in Public Service, namely;
Friendship
Relationships
Service
He then entertained the members with tales from his illustrious career giving evidence of the success he had enjoyed by adopting and promoting these elements in his business and personal life.
His success in Public life both locally and Internationally had evolved by forming friendships with people ( none of this electronic “friendship” so popular today) through meetings in person, sharing confidences and being there “at the right time”(which was just a coincidence, or a bit of luck?).
He gave many examples of the areas of success he had been involved with such as :
The Edinburgh Winter Festival,
International Rugby
Cancer Charity Promotions at home and abroad
Tartan Day in New York
The European and International exchanges which resulted in attracting events to, and promoting the City of Edinburgh.

The Vote of Thanks was given by Brian Buchanan who reflected members enjoyment and appreciation of Eric’s entertaining and humorous talk.
