AK member, Andy Gilchrist kick started the New Year with an illustrated talk on his ‘Career in Agronomy' where his main focus was to increase the quality and quantity of food produced throughout the Nation. Working as an Agronomist, Consultant and Researcher on farms, in the field or in the laboratory his moves around the world brought over 20 house moves for Andy & Sue! It was most enlightening to hear about their lives before Rotary!
Unfortunately, the weather got the better of our meeting at the end of the month but we are hoping that Bassenthwaite RC’s Danda Guan Water Project in Nepal can be rescheduled for a future date.
Despite a lack of meetings in January we have been busy planning our year ahead.
We have The World Greatest Meal for Polio Plus on Wednesday 20th February – a joint venture with Ambleside Rotary club.
We have an open evening entitled Images of a Warming Planet on Tuesday 26th February with Ashley Cooper. His environmental trips have taken him to all seven continents, from the Inuit communities of the Arctic to the beautiful coral atoll islands of the Pacific Ocean, capturing images that graphically demonstrate the impact of global warming, on people, places and wildlife.
He was awarded the winning image in the climate change category of the prestigious, worldwide, Environmental Photographer of the Year competition.
Following the news of the very sudden death of Diane Oxberry, the BBC North West Weather presenter from Ovarian Cancer we are planning a Cancer Charity Walk & Cream Tea on July 7thin her memory
