Mandy Shepherd gave a lively and interesting presentation on the work of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation set up by her father in 1984. Up to his death in 2017. The Foundation has raised some £9m to protect wildlife. She gave a brief outline of his career as an artist before he started painting his iconic elephants in Africa.
He started his painting career with BOAC (now British Airways) painting pictures of their aircraft. He also painted military subjects and steam engines before an assignment took him to Kenya where he became fascinated with elephants. He soon became aware of the depredations to these animals and others such as rhinos due to poaching for ivory and horns. He determined to do something about it and established the Foundation to employ wardens to try, with others, to combat poaching. The Foundation also seeks to educate rural communities in Africa of the value that nature tourism can bring them.
Since the initial work in Africa, the Foundation has expanded its activities to help protect endangered animals in other parts of the world. Snow Leopards, Tigers and Pangolins are but a few  that benefit from their work.
Mandy concluded her presentation with a video on the work of the Foundation and the shocking scenes of dead animals due to poaching.
In proposing the vote of thanks, Duncan Law thanked Mandy for her presentation but said that as someone keen on shooting and fishing he was perhaps the wrong person to be making comment. However as he sought to eliminate vermin and not endangered species he could be forgiven.
