YOUR LOCAL ROTARY CLUB - WHAT WE DO AND WHO WE ARE
Submitted to C & B News for consideration March 2019
WHAT DO WE DO? HERE’S JUST SOME OF IT
Locally we founded the Community Chest in 2016 and now administer it jointly with Balerno Village Trust (BVT). It has a budget this year of £6000, funded in equal parts by the Rotary Club, BVT and CALA Homes. Since its inception it has supported
local schools, junior football and basketball teams, scouts and brownies; dementia groups; Balerno Christmas lights and Balerno tennis club; Ratho environmental groups; Currie Community Centre; Riding for the Disabled and more..
We organise an annual Primary Schools Quiz involving 6 local primary schools - Clovenstone, Juniper Green, Nether Currie, Currie, Dean Park and Ratho. In 2018 there were 68 children competing in teams of 4.
We have worked with Nether Currie Primary School in forming and running a Rotakids Club.
We organise and host the local and Area stages of the annual Rotary Young Musician Competition. This gives local youngsters the opportunity, often for the first time, to perform in front of a public audience. In 2018 we hosted the Britain and Ireland Grand Final at Heriot Watt University.
We sponsor local youngsters to take part in the annual Rotary Youth Leadership Award programme.
We offer to senior secondary school pupils the opportunity to spend a year studying at universities in Georgia, USA.
We deliver the Currie & Balerno News to retailers; and we also record items from the paper for blind and visually impaired local people.
Internationally we contribute to Rotary International’s End Polio Now campaign which over 30 years has reduced the disease by 99% world-wide and the number of polio-endemic countries from 122 to just 3 – Afghanistan, Pakistan and Nigeria.
We support the Turing Trust in collecting and refurbishing discarded computers for schools in Ghana and Malawi.
We support ShelterBox providing help for people made homeless in disaster areas and Aquabox providing help in areas where a lack of clean water presents a threat to life.
We support Ann Gloag’s Freedom from Fistula Foundation providing free surgeries and free maternity care to ensure safe childbirth and training local healthcare workers in Africa.
We Lend with Care. Lendwithcare.org provides for individuals and groups to lend to small entrepreneurs in developing countries. These entrepreneurs apply for a loan, submitting a business plan that includes a repayment schedule. The lenders receive regular monthly repayments and the recipients are helped to find their own route out of poverty. Repayments are re-invested. In 7 years we have made 434 loans totalling £16,414 from an initial investment of £2980 from the Club and from individuals.
AND WHO ARE WE?
We are a Club of just over 40 members from Currie and Balerno but also from Ratho, Juniper Green and beyond.
We meet every Wednesday evening at the Kingsknowe Golf Club where we enjoy a meal, good speakers and excellent company. We also enjoy a social programme, including outside visits.
Would you like to join us? We welcome new members, men and women, who look to make a contribution to the local community and to help people in need world-wide.
