This year Currie Balerno Rotary Club organised its 9th annual Primary Schools Quiz and it was held for the first time in Ratho. The Ratho Primary School provided the venue and welcomed 4 other schools – and the Rotary Club of course.

There were 56 competitors, 14 teams of 4 each, from the 5 schools – Balerno’s Dean Park, Currie, Nether Currie, Juniper Green and Ratho. The Rotary Club provided a supervisor for each team, 2 adjudicators, 2 score keepers, a time keeper, a photographer and Mike Latimer in overall charge.

The quiz consisted of 8 rounds and the results were close. So close was the competition that nine of the fourteen teams taking part came within 10 points of each other. The winners were Currie Primary School’s Red team with 47 points. Balerno’s Dean Park Gold team came second with 43 points and Currie’s Gold team was third with 39.

Once again this competition was a success. It is always great to see these youngsters taking the event seriously and enjoying the experience; and as ever we Rotarians were so impressed by the knowledge and ability on display. We congratulate all the competitors but also the teachers who must find the performance of their pupils very rewarding.

Some 30 Rotary Clubs organise local competitions with a total of around 200 schools taking part in the District competition which covers Edinburgh and the South and South East of Scotland; and for the first time ever there will then be an All-Scotland Grand Final.

The 2 winning teams, Currie Red and Dean Park Gold, now go on to the Area Semi-Final. Watch this space.
