Some years ago the Rotary Club started a scheme to sponsor students in Ghana at the Integrated Centres for Employable Skills (ICCES), a vocational schools programme that started as a United Nations initiative.
Government funding for secondary education in Ghana ends at the age of 13 and if parents cannot afford to pay school and exam fees after that the children are obliged to leave school and find work, mostly in subsistence farming.
It costs only £90 a year to fund a child covering these fees and some books and course materials. Our Club has funded 12 students annually at different ICCES through our International Student Sponsorship Programme for a number of years.  The programme is administered in Ghana by the Turing Trust, a charity that refurbishes used IT equipment and sends it to Africa for use in these schools.
Recently we heard that one of our students, Francisca, had completed her studies in Electrical Engineering and started a new Electrical business.  Here is her story:

Francisca Agyeiwaa Buu benefited from the Turing Trust Student Scholarship scheme studying Electrical Engineering and computer training for two academic years and completed her formal vocational and technical training at the Amoawi ICCES Training Centre last year (2018/19).
She graduated with two nationally recognized certificates namely:
1.  NVTI foundation Certificate
2.  GES/NABPTEX Certificate.
Upon completion she took part of an entrepreneurship training and challenge program called ‘YIEDIE’ organized by global communities.
This was a very challenging contest with several other young, talented and ambitious artisans competing for the limited slot available for the grant. Through hard work and dedication Francisca emerged as one of the best among the 700 participants who took part of the training. She was given a grant of GHS: 6,500.00 (about £960) to start her own basic electrical equipment sales and repairs shop at Offinso municipality where she hails from.
