Youth Engagement
for Global Action

International Youth Day is held each year on 12 August and is an initiative that celebrates the qualities of young people and that recognises the challenges that today’s youth can face.

International Youth Day began in 2000 and was organised by the United Nations to celebrate the contribution that young people make in education, employment, conflict resolution and social justice to name a few.

The 2020 theme is “Youth Engagement for Global Action”, the aim of which is to shed light on the need to enable the engagement of youth by making local, national and global institutions more inclusive for the purpose of strengthening their capacity (and relevance) to achieve global action.

This year’s IYD seeks to put the spotlight on youth engagement through the following three interconnected streams:

1. Engagement at the local/community level;
2. Engagement at the national level (formulation of laws, policies,
                                              and their implementation);

3. Engagement at the global level.
