With a population of over 15 million, Cambodia has only around 60 ophthalmologists. More than 51% of the people live by the river.
For the last 15 years a team of specialist volunteers from France have been making around 10 visits a year, over which time they have carried out more than 80,000 consultations and more than 10,000 surgical operations. All delivered by boat.
The boat and operating theatre need to be updated and Rotary clubs in France and Belgium have come together to support this. We were happy to join in and committed £1,000 two years ago. Rotary District committed a further $2,000. The project has since been approved by Rotary Foundation and, as a Global project, has attracted further funds.
Covid inevitably slowed down progress in refitting the boat, but work got done. A wonderful project.
