In 2018 & 2019 we organised 2 very successful Pink 5K Walks in aid of National Charities. This year, following the reduction in donations for charities due to Covid, we felt it was very important in helping a local charity, and chose St Mary’s Hospice at Ulverston as our beneficiary.
So many patients and their families within the Ambleside and the South Lakes area have received support from the moment of diagnosis and beyond from St Mary's. Their care and comfort for patients living with any life-shortening illness or long-term condition and their families is paramount
The Hospice services are free for all patients, their families and carers. However, there is a significant cost involved in providing such care - approx. £3.5 million a year but only 17% of their costs are paid for by the NHS, resulting in the need to raise £9,000 per day!
Once again this Family Walk from Ambleside to Pelter Bridge and back under Loughrigg brought lots of ‘Pink Bling & Sparkle’ to Ambleside and raised much needed funds for such a worthy local cause in the process. Following the successful event donations continued to trickle in, mainly due to Martin Clark’s swim challenge. One of our members having challenged Martin to swim in his pink wig & tutu for an extra donation resulted in an interview on BBC Radio Cumbria and more friends and family taking up the challenge.
On November 2nd the club was delighted to welcome members, friends of Rotary and Rebecca Brown, Fund Raiser from St Mary’s, to receive a cheque for £2500 from the Pink 5K Walk and Tea. A wonderful Jacobs Join Supper with lots of chatter and laughter was a fitting way to celebrate the success of the event. Once again, our thanks to our sponsors of the event Dents Textile Sensors, Matthew Benjamin, The Brown Horse Winster, Pets by the Lake and Freshers Café and Fox Ghyll B&B who kindly donated the proceeds from their ice cream sales.
Needless to say we are already being asked what date we will be holding the event in 2022 – watch this space!
