Blaize Trailers Walk 26/2/13

Tue, Feb 26th 2013 at 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Stephen Smith - Walk Leader - From Farnley Hall car park we went through Gildersome and then Cockers Dale on our way back to Farnley Hall. Lunch was after the walk at the Greyhound in Tong.

The weather started murky, remained murky for the entire walk and was still murky when we departed for home: but at least it was dry if a little cold.  Nine intrepid travellers set off from the car park at Farnley Hall (the one at the edge of New Farnley just off the Leeds ring road, not the one near Otley) at 10 minutes after 10 o'clock, delayed due to the late arrival of one James Stewart, a welcome but tardy guest.  We made our steady way through New Blackpool and eventually climbed the hill to Farnley Wood farm, from which an impressive but misty view of Leeds was obtained.  A mild slope took us down to Farnley Wood beck and, after a short stretch on the A62, off we went across a field to the only bridge we were to tackle - a single railway sleeper it was - alas with no John B to take a photo.  An interesting old track led to Gildersome and not long after we encountered a section of the Leeds Country Way which yielded distant views of Drighlington and took us past the head spring of Andrew beck.  Eventually, we crossed the A58 (again) and left the Leeds Country Way to take a contouring path through the woods of Cockersdale, perhaps the nicest stretch of the walk, which ended a mile later back at the car park.  Lunch was taken at The Greyhound in Tong, where nine became ten, we having been joined by one Roy Tate.

Distance of walk: 8 miles (according Tim Ratcliffe's pedometer).  Time taken: about 4 hours.

Accident log: J Waterhouse, falling down having tried (and failing) to walk backwards: P Smith, slashed thumb courtesy of some recalcitrant barbed wire: J Smith, losing ( and eventually retrieving) lower section of walking stick, it having taken several hundred yards to determine it had gone missing: J Smith (again), falling out of car having failed to notice the seat belt in his way: T Ashton, torn jacket due (again) to a recalcitrant but different piece of barbed wire.
