Sun Dial repairs

Rotary Club of Birstall Luddites
Oakwell Hall Rotary Sun Dial.

"The year 2005 celebrated the 100 years of Rotary Internationals creation by Paul Harris in Chicago.  Various ways were discussed to celebrate this within district  ~ when I would be Governor ~ and our club.
Within our club, following a suggestion from Jill it was decided to sponsor a sundial in the ornamental garden behind Oakwell Hall.  This was done, looked good, and the feature "switched on " by Gordon MacInally the R.I.B.I. President on his official visit [ he also planted a tree].

The solid brass gnomon ~ the angled arm ~ didn't last long and was vandalised & disappeared.  A whole new unit was fitted ~ & no surprise the arm again vanished.

It remained so for many years.  Last Wednesday Terry & I after ascertaining the correct angle for the gnomon fitted a replacement ~ a detachable one.  When we returned an hour later to take a photo, that had been stolen!!!.  I have since placed four different pieces & they all have been removed or vanished, at least now they are easily replaced.  If a member visits and there is no arm in place please put something there ~ a straw works well ~ and at least the sundial looks complete & tells the time"
