President's Quiz

Thu, Jun 24th 2021 at 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

A quiz to mark the end of President Jan's unusual year.

The word Quiz on a colourful background

The final event of President Jan’s year should have been a Dinner at the Ivy Hill Hotel. Unfortunately this could not go ahead owing to the continuation of the lockdown, so she organised a relaxed evening online quiz instead. Participants were allocated to a team as they booked in and each team was put into a separate breakout room.

A list of questionsSteve Moriaty was the Quiz Master, a role he has filled superbly on many occasions. He gave us all the attached “crossword” to complete in our teams. This was just for fun and to act as a tie-breaker in case it was needed. In the event it wasn’t needed, which was just as well as all the teams solved it.

Since this was supposed to be a relaxed evening, there were just four rounds. To give you a flavour, here is a question from each round, together with the answer:

Only Connect

What connects zither, sitar, dulcimer and psaltery?

They are all stringed instruments

Top of the Pops

What novelty record was a hit for Napoleon XIV in 1966?

“They are coming to take me away, ha ha.”

The 1960s

What was Lesley Hornby better known as?

Twiggy

Would I lie to you?

Is it true or false that J K Rowling has no middle name?

True. She is Joanne Rowling. Her publishers insisted she use a middle initial and she chose K in memory of her grandmother.

It was a very tight finish. We congratulate Team Three for winning and thank Jan and Steve for a very enjoyable evening.
