John Cranwell was one of the founding members of Borderland Rotary. He earnt the highest Rotary award of a Paul Harris Fellowship, and was an antique bookseller trading as “Bookworld” in Oswestry for many years.
After John’s death in 2014, Borderland Rotary decided that, in keeping with John’s passion for the literary arts, a fitting memorial would be to recognise young people for their creative writing skills.
A trophy for The John Cranwell Young Writer Award was commissioned.
This annual trophy is presented for the best submission to Borderland Rotary in the local round of Rotary’s Young Writer Competition.
The competition is for an essay of around 500 words with entries welcomed in each of three age groups (7-10; 11-13; and 14-17).
The winning entry in each age group is entered into the Rotary District competition with the potential to further progress through a Regional stage to the National Final.
School English teachers can arrange competition entries for any youngster.
