We were delighted to welcome 29 guests of mature years to the Chelmsford Cathedral Chapter House for afternoon tea and entertainment. It had been three years since the previous one.

A man in shirtsleeves using a microphoneTransport was laid on for those guests who needed it. A number of our members acted as “staff” and Steve Moriaty provided the entertainment.

He started by singing some songs that the guests would have known well. He invited them to join in those they knew, which they did with enthusiasm with bites of food in between.

There was then a pause while Club members cleared away the plates and served tea and coffee and Steve got his breath back. After that he acted as quizmaster, with a cunning mixture of questions most people would know the answer to (“Which country was the Queen visiting when she learned of her father’s death?”) and those that were more difficult (“What came off rationing in 1952?”).

The guests all appeared to enjoy themselves. One of them proposed a vote of thanks to the Club volunteers for all they had done to make the afternoon a success.

We express our thanks to Steve and to all Club members who acted as chauffeurs for guests and helped in the Chapter House.
