Derian House Children’s Hospice looks after more than 450 seriously ill babies, children and young
people from across the North West. The charity has been offering families a home from
home for almost 30 years, and helps them to make the very most of the time they have, creating precious
memories to last a lifetime. Derian House offers respite and end of life care, as well as support services for the whole family such as bereavement counselling for parents, grandparents and siblings for as long as they need it.
The charity operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It never closes to families who need it. Families enjoy coming to the hospice for splash sessions in the hydrotherapy pool, to visit the state-of-the-art cinema,
or to enjoy an afternoon in the sensory room.
The charity has a Pets as Therapy dog who pays visits to the children, and four top quality holiday lodges where families can enjoy a free holiday to make happy memories together. Although services are free to families, it costs £5.7 million to run every year. With just 17% of funding coming from the NHS, the charity relies heavily on the support of its generous donors to continue to look after families now and in the future.
One dad, Zahid, whose baby son “Little Zed” was born with a rare disorder and came to Derian House to help the family settle into a routine before going home, said: “For the first time since our baby was born we’ve had the opportunity to live like a family. The team is amazing, they’ve taken so much pressure off us and I won’t forget this experience for the rest of my life.”
