The Rotary Club of Thanet support Thanet schools.
The Rotary club of Thanet President Maria Blackburn, supported by fellow Rotarian Jim Nicholson, was delighted to hand over a cheque for £2,000 to young pupils at Charles Dickens school in Broadstairs. And it is all for fun!
The children’s science teacher Lewis Curtis believes that integrating the teaching of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM subjects) into schools’ extra-curricular activities will significantly enhance students’ learning. The Rotary Club of Thanet support, following on an earlier donation from Broadstairs Rotary, will help the school purchase sophisticated LEGO kit not only to enhance STEM education for pupils but also to instil principles of renewable energy innovation and potentially help develop future scientists and engineers.
Charles Dickens school already run a LEGO (SPIKE) club and Lewis has plans to share his ideas and equipment with other schools and to enter the best STEM pupils in annual robotics competitions.
The Rotary Club of Thanet support for STEM subjects teaching stands alongside the club’s ‘Literacy Matters!’ project which has invested some £5,000 over the last few years, purchasing 500 books for Thanet schools. Thanks to a significant discount from Margate Bookshop, along with a special Schools Day at the Turner Centre last Autumn, organised by Margate Bookie, where the children enjoyed wonderful workshops by published authors. Margate Bookie are now planning another day on 10 October with further Thanet Rotary sponsorship.
