The Rotary Club of Thanet welcomed Mark and Pam Bathurst from the Medway Queen Preservation Society at their meeting on Monday 24th February 2025. Mark and Pam spoke to us at some length regarding the restoration of the paddle steamer The Medway Queen. This has been a huge project to save this historic ship which during the evacuation from Dunkirk in 1940 bought back some 7,000 troops from the beaches.
They illustrated the paddle steamer’s history, the stages of its restoration after being left to rot and its importance as part of our heritage
The dedication of the Trustees overseeing the restoration along with skills of the engineers and other craftsmen has been truly inspirational and the whole story can be found on their website below. Hopefully those living in Thanet will be able to see the vessel when it returns to Ramsgate this May in celebration and in memory of the evacuation and those who took part.
