For some time now Sunlight Rotary has suppoprted the work of the Purple Community Fund (PCF) in Manila and now inTanzania.
PCF was started by Jane Walker in 1996 when she visited the Philippines on a career break and heard of the horrendous conditions in which families were living and working on rubbish dumps in Manila.
It was the most pivotal moment of her life and the start of a 23 year crusade to try and help break the cycle of poverty through education, welfare and livelihood programmes. After building the world’s first school out of recycled shipping containers and transforming the lives of thousands of families, the School became a purple beacon of hope.
Our Rotary Club particuarly supports one of PCF's environmentally friendly projects by saving ring pulls from drink cans which trained artisans in the Phillipines upcycle into wonderfully fashionable bags, purses and other products. Another project similarly turns discarded and glossy magazines into fantastic unique jewellery.
Sunlight Rotary also sells some of the products made by the Fund to support PCF's other projects - all aimed at making people self-sufficent who otherwise would spend the lives scavenging on the rubbish dumps.
