10 school choirs performed in our annual West Road Concert Hall Carol Concerts. They were a great opportunity for the children to perform in a professional venue and were enjoyed by large audiences of their relatives and friends.
The £12,000 that was raised will be divided equally between three schools in Africa. Click on the photos of two of them above. Click the blue text in each description below to learn more - click the play arrows on the videos for the first two and visit a website for the third.
Kamatarisi Primary School in Mbarara, Uganda, is in the town that our current club President, Henry Lugobe, comes from. The local Rotary club is supporting them to repair their dilapidated buildings, install washing facilities and a latrine for use by girls only, and provide new computers.
Children in Freedom Primary School, Nakuru, Kenya, educates children in an Africo-centric manner which gives them pride in their identity, their language and the colour of their skin. This contrasts with the ex-colonial model of many African schools.
Solomon Qatyana Primary School in Western Cape is in one of the most deprived townships in South Africa. The local Rotary club has provided support to their literacy programme over many years. During the Covid-19 pandemic, they also ran a food bank for the pupils and their families.
Our club has long-established links with the Rotary Clubs in each area, who will ensure that the funds are channelled appropriately. As all those involved are volunteers, there will be no administrative costs in transferring them.
