Rotary Club of Birstall Luddites
Speaker George Mullen - RYLA
On 9th Sept George came to the club and gave a talk about how his RYLA course had helped to
change his life and start his career in medicine.
George talked about when he did RYLA when he turned 16 and went in a group of 30 up to Hebden Bridge.
He talked about how he gained confidence meeting people through the weeks exercises in the course and said RYLA had made him a different person.
George talked about after RYLA when he became GB Ice Hockey captain going to the World Championship in Slovakia and Canada.
George's ambition was to be a doctor and study medicine. He did work experience at LGI and applied for Univ and had got 4 offers with 3 As at A level. After a horrendous interview George passed to enrol at Bristol.
He is now in the first year of a 5 year course at medical school.
George thanked the club for giving him the opportunity to go to RYLA and said what a big important opportunity for candidates enrolling each year.
Past Pres Mary thanked George for his talk and for giving good feed back to the club
justifying the club RYLA investment.
George took questions from Luddites.
Past DG Robert said since the courses started he thought George was the best candidate he had seen.

Club Speaker - Mon 16th Sept Iain McInnes --- Charity Zarach
The Childrens bed Charity
Beds have become a luxury item for hundreds of thousands of families, who face the devastating decision to pay for food and fuel, or to buy their child a bed.*Bed poverty exists when a family doesn’t have the sleeping arrangements they need for their children due to a lack of financial resources*. For children in this situation, it has a significant impact on their education.
Zarach’s mission to ensure that every child in England has a bed of their own gives them a greater chance to learn and succeed at school.
