4 March 2019 Presentation evening

Mon, Mar 4th 2019 at 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Cheques totalling over £5000 were presented to Shelterbox, St Petroc's, Cornwall Hospice Care, National Autistic Society, and Penhaligon's Friends.

At an “open” meeting for members and their wives on 4 March, President David Hughes presented cheques totalling more than £5,000 to ShelterBox, St Petroc’s, Cornwall Hospice Care, the Cornwall branch of the National Autistic Society, and Penhaligon’s Friends.  The money had been raised by a number of “fun raising” activities such as carol singing, quiz nights, concerts and golf days.

One of the local charities regularly supported by the Club is ShelterBox.  Originally adopted as Helston Lizard Rotary Club’s millennium project in 2000, ShelterBox is now Rotary International’s official project partner in disaster relief.  Rotarians worldwide also provide local knowledge, and support ShelterBox with delivering aid to displaced families after disaster strikes.  The charity’s Rotary Engagement Executive Olivia Jeffries was handed a cheque for £1,188, the proceeds of a special charity concert.

In a popular “fun” event, members again dressed in Victorian costume to sing carols as part of Truro’s late night Christmas shopping evenings. This year the singers plus an in-house raffle raised more than £800, which was presented to St Petrocs.  The charity’s representative, Jessica Hodges, said “It costs £28 per night to provide one person with a bed and as our Truro night shelter is funded completely by donations, your donation makes a huge difference to the number of people we can support.“

Sue Ledson representing the local branch of Cornwall Hospice Care was presented with a cheque for £1,000 to support the specialist care being provided to people with terminal illnesses in Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia’s hospices, and through the charity's community services.

Susie Seviour, chair of the Cornish branch of the National Autistic Society, said that the Club’s £1,000 donation would be used to support people with autism and their families in Cornwall.

The final cheque for £1,000 was presented to Nick Marsh from Penhaligon’s Friends, a charity set up in 1995 to support bereaved children, young people, parents and carers throughout Cornwall.  Thanking members of the Club for their support Nick Marsh said that the donation would be used to provide ongoing support including Memory Days and regular support groups for teenagers.
