Built as a training camp for the Bradford Pals, Raikeswood Camp in Skipton was subsequently used to accommodate over 900 German prisoners of war. Anne Buckley of the University of Leeds will talk about her work in translating a book written by 60 of the German officers . In addition she will reveal some of the fascinating stories of the men themselves, who included naval captains, U-boat officers and airmen as well as foot soldiers. Anne has been working with the Heritage Lottery Funded project Craven and the First World War, based at Craven Museum in Skipton. She will talk about the activities, including archaeology in residents’ gardens, that have been organised to rewrite the story of the camp back into the history of the area.
