Holocaust Memorial Day 2016
Holocaust Memorial Day is commemorated across the country each year and the theme for this year is ‘Don’t Stand By’.
The Holocaust and subsequent genocides took place because the local populations allowed insidious persecution to take root. Whilst some actively supported or facilitated state policies of persecution, the vast majority stood by silently – at best, afraid to speak out; at worst, indifferent. Bystanders enabled the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and subsequent genocides.
In Wigan there will be two opportunities for members of the public to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January- one in Leigh Town Hall starting at 12 30 p.m. and one in the Museum of Wigan Life on Library Street in Wigan starting at 2. 30 pm.
There will be a programme of readings, an opportunity for reflection and a formal ceremony of remembrance and commitment. The commemoration event is open to everyone.
Keith Trencher, President of Wigan Rotary Club, several of whose members will be taking part, said, ' It is vital we all come together to remember not only the atrocities committed during the Second World War, but also the many other Genocides, which have taken place and which are still taking place across the world even today'.
